Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSB5 5-Speed Blender, Onyx Black/Stainless SteelCustomer Review: The Sherman Tank of blenders. Summary: 5 Stars
I have 2 young children, and have had more than one of my plastic appliances get broken, including the blender the KitchenAid replaced. The stainless steel jar is a Godsend, though it does make it a little more difficult to adjust frozen drinks and other beverages during blending. However it's graduated on the inside so you don't have to pre-measure the ingredients. The motor has a large amount of torque. If the countertop is damp, the blender will actually 'twist' slightly when you turn it on (so does the big KitchenAid food processor btw). It easily chops ice and other solids, producing excellent smoothies and frozen daquiries. Because the jar is metal it absorbs the temperature of the contents, so you will need to adjust your bulletproof frozen drink ratios, adding a little more liquid, to get the same results you are used to. It's not unusual for ice to form on the outside of the jar during blending, leading me to think that the liquid inside is freezing as well, thus more liquid is needed to thin the mixture. I get great results with no chunks or graininess. This temperature absorbtion quirk could also be why others are having difficulty with the top leaking while blending hot beverages - the steel expands when heated creating gaps around the cap. This doesn't worry me, because I only use the blender for cold blending. Would I buy again? Absolutely. And the lack of color choice? Now that it's available in Black and White, I don't know of anyone whose kitchen it won't look okay in (except my Mom's avocado 1960s kitchen, that is). The best part is knowing that I'll never have to replace the jar because it got knocked to the floor or was dropped.
Description of KitchenAid KSB5 5-Speed Blender, Onyx Black/Stainless SteelBlenders aren't just for daiquiris and milk shakes anymore. Start your day off with a fruit smoothie, puree a root vegetable soup for dinner, mix up some hummus, you get the idea. If you want the most powerful premium blender in the KitchenAid lineup, you're in the right place. This powerhouse can crush ice at any speed. Amazingly enough it is also surprisingly quiet. This is the blender of the future. It performs all the traditional blending tasks (crushing ice for margaritas, thinning ice cream) plus it can be used like a food processor (mincing garlic, puréeing peppers). The wide jar is rounder and squatter than old-style blenders, which makes it easier to reach in and scrape the sides (when the blender is off!). To reduce splatters of strawberry daiquiri, the Step Start feature starts blending slowly, then picks up to the chosen speed. This blender also comes with a booklet containing 75 recipes--my favorite is the Frosty Chocolate Raspberry Latte. --Dana Van Nest
