Customer Review: Not a basic, but terrific to own

I do not consider my KitchenAid a kitchen basic, but since I do quite a bit of scratch baking (primarily cakes), I find this a helpful tool that makes baking easier. It is not as noisy as I expected it to be. I have used it while my toddler was napping without waking him up, and I have a small house. I also much prefer the texture of the whipped cream using the whisk attachment because it is much lighter and fluffier than when using an immersion blender as I did before. While I don't recommend it, I have even creamed butter at refrigerator temperature. Other times I have dumped an ingredient in at once rather than little by little as the recipe suggested with no bad result (e.g. eggs into creamed butter & sugar, and powdered sugar into chocolate frosting). This is a good thing, because sometimes it is hard to add ingredients little-by-little in the space between the bowl opening and the machine, as when you might be adding powdered sugar straight from the sifter. And, I will say I have not yet mastered attaching the bowl to the stand with ease. The accessory to my KitchenAid I look most forward to getting is another bowl. If you are in the process of building up kitchen equipent, a hand mixer would be a cheaper and adequate substitution for a stand mixer for most baking. The advantages of a KitchenAid are lots of power, and being able to mix ingredients hands-free.
