Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid K45WSSWH Classic Series 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer with Spatula, White

Customer Review: KA Classic is a great choice for most households!
Summary: 5 Stars

Since I purchased my KA Classic about a month ago I've deliberately sought out excuses to have to 'whip up' desserts and doughs. So far I've used it to make brownies at least four times, cookies three times, and three batches of sponge dough bread. This machine makes mixing and kneading extremely easy, and has more than enough power for occasional and hobbyist cooks in my opinion.

In the time BKA (Before Kitchen Aid) I had a hand-me-down handmixer that I used occasionally to mix cake or cookie batters. It ran fine until earlier this summer when the gears started slipping and the unit smelled of smoke. Needless to say the hand mixer bought the farm shortly thereafter leaving me looking for another mixer. I read several articles suggesting the KA stand mixers, and quickly devoured as many reviews of the different mixers as I could find on the internet. Ultimately my choice was narrowed to between the Artisan and the Classic mixers. Though it would have been nice to have the handled bowl and slightly higher wattage of the Artisan I opted to go with the Classic for several reasons. First, I realized that the tasks I would need the mixer for would A)be smaller than most (i.e. I would be cooking for two instead of the six to eight person families found recommending the bigger bowl size), B) occur moderately often as opposed to everyday use, and C) require less wattage due to recipe choices (i.e. dessert and light bread making instead of heavy duty whole wheat bread making). Plus, the Classic takes up less space on my counter than the Artisan would and, although color selection would have been nice, I am more than happy with the classic white enamel finish of my mixer.

The price was also a consideration, since for $99 (at the time of purchase) including shipping I could have a new Classic. It would cost close to $150 for a refurb Artisan with a lesser warranty. Although my package arrived in less than stellar shape (one corner was dented in signifigantly upon arrival) the mixer and contents arrived just fine. The bonus spatula is awesome for scraping the bowl, and I have not found another spatula that matches the curve of the bowl so well as this one. The bowl, flat beater and dough hook attachments are all dishwasher safe making cleanup a breeze. The coated beater should be washed by hand, but unless you are whipping eggs or liquids frequently it is doubtful this limitation will result in more than an occasional inconvenience.

I would recommend that with the savings between the Classic and Artisan models a new owner should seriously consider picking up a second (handled) bowl and a set of bowl covers. Another good investment would be a mixer cover -- you can either purchase a KA made one or sew one yourself easily enough. On the other hand, from what I've read the majority of the KA attachments are cost prohibitive for the food (and amount of mechanical trouble in some cases)they create.

Overall I have been very pleased with the KA Classic mixer and would recommend that unless you cook on a professional level or need to generate a large number of servings the Classic has more than enough power and bowl capacity for most households.

Description of KitchenAid K45WSSWH Classic Series 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer with Spatula, White

KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4.5 Quart Stand Mixer, White
KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 250 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. The bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a bonus spatula and a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim
