I did a LOT of research before buying a toaster ovem, wanted one for the long haul. I wanted one that would work well as a toaster, be simple enough for my son to use (hot surfaces notwithstanding) and I wanted convection. The Breville seems to be the cadillac, but the cost is stunning, and the electronic contols and pre-sets turned me off. I actually bought the cuisinart brick oven- great, simple controls, but the thing was a monster, and the toast function didn't work at all. I found a GREAT deal on this kitchenaid, and so far, i am happy. Toaster ovens inevitably toast more slowly than toasters do. Thi one meets my expectations. I wish it toasted with an on/off button rather than a timer dial, but that was not a deal-breaker. There is no internal light, but the heat elements make enough light for me. Non-convection baking is not an option, only convection. This is not an issue for me, and the convection fan is super-quiet. I have not put an oven thermometer in to test the temp, but cooking seems to happen at the same pace as my main oven, so i suspect the thermostat is close. This oven has a huge capacity without totally overwhelming the countertop. The crumb tray slides out from the front. It is a very attractive and so far (3 weeks in) very sturdy-seeming, as is my expectstion of Kitchenaid. Especially having found an "open box" from an online seller i trust for a GREAT price, I am really happy, and am just fine not spending another $150 for "smart" functions and electronic controls that i don't trust to last. I do plan to buy a baking stone for crisper pizza crust.
