I have owned this product for about 6 months and the knives are great. I have decided to only wash them by hand (only product I have ever done this too, I am a BIG fan of the dishwasher) and I have not had a problem with them. I have left them in a pile next to or in the sink and washed them later when I got a chance and I have never had a problem with them rusting. Occasionally one will make it into the dishwasher and they have came out fine, but I don't want to push my luck.
The steak knives are not the same quality as the other knives, but it was not a decision killer for me. I paid between $50 - $60 at a discount store (Ross) for them and I have seen them priced similar at Amazon during sales. They are well worth it for that price. The upright block takes little room on the counter and I am very happy with my decision for the price I paid.
