Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RRKSB5OB Ultra Power 5-Speed Blender, Onyx BlackCustomer Review: Wow. Why did I waste my time on other brands? Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, for twenty-something (ahem) years, I've been buying blenders that are the twins to the one my mother used - something with twenty-three buttons that meant nothing to me like "frappe.'" Who uses that word in everyday life? "Oh Honey, would you like me to frappe' that pork chop for you?"
Besides all the buttons, the blenders had one other thing in common: after about five years, they were trash. Actually, they were trash from before they came out of the box, but I didn't know that. They danced along countertops, bogged down on anything more challenging than an overripe peach, and sputtered to death on an occasional ice cube. The most recent version was required to do nothing more than liquefy ripe, cooked tomatoes for sauce, and you guessed it, the thing croaked, leaving me to puree half finished tomatoes with a sieve and a spoon.
Once again, I am shopping for a blender, and not wanting to spend a lot of money on a rather delicate, almost disposable appliance. Checking through the sale items, I came across a little fireplug of a unit, made by Kitchen-Aid. I was rather surprised at the number of stars next to its name, so I took a little peek.
Most of the other writers raved about the machine, and one partucular reviewer mentioned that the machine never skipped across his countertops. Hmmmm. The price was right, and if it croaked, I wasn't out any more money than the other crummy blenders.
It didn't ship with the speed of light, arriving two weeks after I bought it. (Yes, I understand that Amazon's two day shipping means "two days from whenever we feel like it.") When it finally arrived, I thoughtm I was bringing gold blocks upstairs. I stripped off Amazon's characteristic overpacking materials, and wow. That is one industrial looking little machine. It claimed to be able to process as much "stuff" as the previous blender, even though it looked smaller. (that's because the motor portion is shorter.) I gave it a whirl.
It has been two days, and this thing has processed more food than the previous five blenders we've had. Tomatoes, our usual blended food, were nothing to the machine. Neither were fruits, meats, ice cream, or ice. I made potato pancakes without grating the potatoes not cutting them fine enough for the blender to smile. The machine doesn't walk, make excessive noise, and really feels like it's going to be a very happy five years. ;-)
This machine seems as sturdy as my Kitchen-aid mixer, an inheritance from a long gone relative and about 40 years old. Aside from the Harvest Gold color, it works perfectly, and seems good for another 40 years.m
Description of Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RRKSB5OB Ultra Power 5-Speed Blender, Onyx BlackCapable of crushing ice and being pulsed at any of five speeds, this sturdy, powerful, 500-watt blender provides ease of operation and versatility for a serious cook. It creates frozen drinks like smoothies and margaritas; chops nuts, coffee beans, vegetables, and chocolate; mixes batters and party dips; purées baby food and soups; removes lumps from gravy; and shreds cheese. Four cutting blades whirl at different levels for thorough work. KitchenAid's "step-start" feature automatically begins a process slowly to prevent splatters and quickly increases speed to the level selected on the touchpad control panel. The blender has a 40-ounce, dishwasher-safe, glass jar with a drip-resistant pouring lip and a tight-fitting top. Removing the cap creates an opening for adding ingredients, and the cap is a 2-ounce measuring container. The blender's heavy metal base doesn't skid on its rubber feet during operation and offers a cord-wrap underneath. Base and control panel wipe clean easily. The blender measures 7 inches wide, 15 inches high, and 8 inches deep and weighs 13.2 pounds. Its instruction booklet includes 75 recipes. --Fred Brack Editor's note: This is a reconditioned small appliance.
